Subject: [*] info-mac submission -> Macro Key 1.1
Macro Key is a text tool to write (and repeat a certain number of times) a
word or a sentence with a single key stroke. The tool is very simple to
use. You record a sequence to the keyboard: a word, a sentence or a series
of any characters. Then you link the sequence to a special keystroke (or
key combination with shift, option, command,...). The next time you press
this special key, named caller key, the sequence will write by itself.
Moreover, you can choose to repeat the sequence many times. The sequence
and the caller key are known as a macro. You can restrict the macro to a
single application when the sequence has no meaning outside the
application.
Macro Key records and replays any sequence of character, but doesn't record
any mouse movement or button state. There is no limit to the number of
macros you can record.

Here's version 1.0.4 of LanSatellite.
LanSatellite is an application for viewing, monitoring, and graphically
mapping your AppleTalk network and its devices. It requires System 7 or
later and is shareware US$20.
Changes in version 1.0.4 are:
- Changed "GatorBox" recognizer to Variable type so it doesn't conflict
with "GatorBox CS". This was causing problems where GatorBox CS nodes
that also had a GatorBox entity would result in multiple obsolete nodes
appearing.
- Fixed bug on small screens where network window was opened incorrectly
and was not scrollable.
- Network documents now remember the window position when re-opened.

Please accept this submission to your archives.
Could you replace the last version of Mosacon (Mosacon 1.0.1)
Mosacon is a game in 256 colors on HyperCard 2.0, which includes the Xcmd
Colorizing HyperCard of BUNG DABBA.
Before opening the stack, allot the maximum of Ram you can to HyperCard.
Install the fonts CouRier, Helvetica, Symbol & Times in your system.
The game is very easy : you have to draw a mosaic with 6 colors (at least) on a
checkerboard by moving a cursor. This places a different color each time you
move it according to the direction it gets.
You can create (Drawing mode) or recreate (Playing mode) a mosaic, save it,
display it where when and as you want, play a blind game, with a limited number
of moves, a limited time, bonus/malus, inversion of moves I
You can also entirely customize the game and choose your cursor, background
color, checkerboard, pieces, keys for moving cursor, differents sounds to play
with I

Subject: [*] system.extension - WindowStacker 1.0
WindowStacker is a free system extension that, incredibly enough,
stacks windows in the Finder. Why on Earth would you want to do
this? Well, if you have more than a few folders on your hard
drive or--even worse--have more than a few hard drives, you know
how easily your desktop can become a hideous, cluttered mess.
Folder windows are especially nasty, what with them sprawling
all over the desktop, mocking your every attempt at efficient
use of your files.
Well, suffer no more at the hands of evil scattered windows!
Tame them, harness them, use them to do your bidding. With
WindowStacker as your window-stacking pal, you can do it!
WindowStacker is FREE and requires System 7 to operate.
Enjoy!

From: ari@world.std.com (Ari I Halberstadt)
Subject: [*] ThreadLib-10d1-c.hqx
ThreadLib implements nonpreemptive multiple thread execution within
a single application. It does not require any extensions, should work
with all Macintosh models (from the Plus on up), and works with
systems 6.0 (tested on 6.0.5) under Finder or MultiFinder, and
system 7.0. ThreadLib compiles into a small library of about 4.5K,
so it won't add much overhead to your application. A small test
application and THINK C project demonstrates how threads are used.
Best of all, the source code, entirely in C, is free.
Every thread has its own stack and exception handling environment;
all other global application data is shared by the threads. Context
switches are very efficient since they involve only a few operations
to save the current thread's state, followed by a longjmp to the new
thread and restoration of the new thread's exception environment. There
are also no restrictions on the objects that can be allocated on a
thread's stack.
The rest of this file [ThreadLib.c] is heavily commented, so you should
be able to follow how threads are implemented. Each external function has
a description of its parameters and what it does.
Also included is an exception handling library. Exceptions are handled
using the standard C routines setjmp and longjmp, and so this library
should be easy to port to a native PowerPC implementation. Comments
in ExceptionLib.c explain how to use the exceptions.
ThreadLib was written using THINK C 5.0.4. Some minor changes may be
needed to port it to MPW C. All suggestions and enhancements are
welcome.

I'd like to know whether it is possible to snoop on how Gopher is connecting
to a particular host; in other words, is it possible to discover the
IP number or domain name of the Gopher host to which it is trying to connect
(or has been unsuccessful in trying).

I remember my very first Mac -- it was a 128k, but I didn't

Mac, an external floppy drive and an Imagewriter I for a cool
grand. Of course, I soon "quadrupled" the RAM to 512k, and
then bought an 800k floppy drive for just $129! Then, thanx
to the brilliant folks at BMUG (the Berkeley Mac Users Group)
I learned how to read HFS floppies (by tricking the system
with System 3.2/Finder 5.2 and installing "HD20" -- though
there was no hard disk there!). That Mac lasted until late
1990, when I sold it to a lawyer in New York for a few hundred
dollars. Sans printer -- my old Imagewriter I is still next
to my desk, churning out the occasional letter or report
(when I don't print it on my LaserWriter PRO 630 at work from

I recently mentioned this to my sister who is a 3M employee, and she took

So if you have had either very good or very bad experiences with 3M disks,

Subject: 660AV File Sharing problem
Greetings and Salutations:
I am working on a Quadra 660AV and seem to be having a problem. When I connect
from the Quadra to another disk, everything is fine. When I connect to the
hard drive thru file sharing from a Mac II ci (System 7.1) or a Mac Plus
(System 6.0.8), everything is fine until I double click to open the hard
drive.
Most of the time (95%) the Quadra locks up, and Macsbug gives me :
System Error #29 at 007058A8
The active program is Finder.
I tried hooking up thru Local talk and directly into our Ethernet system with
the same results. I turned off all the inits I could and turned off the 040
cache, same results.

I need a "typewriter" font. Something that actually looks like it came
off a tatty beaten-up old typewriter, rather than, say, Courier.
Obviously it needs to be freeware or shareware, TrueType or PostScript.
BTW, I tried to use Archie to find "typewriter" but got flooded with
sites which have a TeX font called Typewriter or AmericanTypewriter.
Are these just Courier clones ? If not, is there any way of converting
these TeX fonts to the Mac, I wonder ?...

Hi, I started using applescript regularly, and although being easy to
control, it does not have nearly as much extensions as HyperCard does. I
have the XCMD Adapter, but it requires the AETE editing program (which I
don't have), and OSAX programming skills.
A XCMD/XFCN to OSAX utility would be excellent. Many great systems for
the mac, which reside on xcmds (such as HyperHit,WindowScript, etc.),
would be available globaly! Also, if Fred Rinaldi would be kind enough to
convert his excellent externals archive to native scripting additions,
applescript could get a serious power boost.

What you described is possible. You obviously talking about a direct
connection between the two remote sites, like via T1 line. If this is the
case the connection is accomplished by the black boxes between the two
sites. You would not have to do anything different other than choosing the
correct zone and server.

ARA Setup
I'm trying to set up a dial-in system for my offices. I've seen a lot

good, but some negative). I'd like to connect one of these LineLinks
to a Classic that we have floating around the office and put Apple
Remote Access Personal Server on the Classic and then buy a 10-pack of
the ARA Client software (to start out) for some of our traveling
administrative staff. This should work, in theory, but I'd like to
hear feedback from other managers out there that may have done
something like this recently. No dial-out is needed, and we'll be
starting out with about 6-8 users occasionally dialing in to test out
the system, but might want to expand this eventually to a modem pool
using the LanRover or NetModem. Any suggestions for an initial setup
(LineLink-Classic-ARA Server software) or for expandability would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I suspect you might get a rash of these reports... my best shareware

Subject: COMPUTER & HEALTH
The Computer User Family (CUF) is concerned about the health problem
associated with computers. Video Display Terminals, emit UV and ELF
radiation and may cause cancer, immune system irregularities, miscarriages
and eye fatigue.
Computer noise from fans, disk and CD drives is also becoming a source of
anxiety, stress and general discomfort . We usually don't realize how loud
our computers are: 50dB and more.
These problems should be dealt with and add-ons should be provided for
present computers to avoid putting us at risks. Some safe screens and quiet
power supplies are coming out but they are marginal and prices are
prohibitive.
Meanwhile the general guidelines for the users are:
1. Position yourself approximately 22 inches to 28 inches (arm's length) from
the screen and four feet from the sides and rear of other terminals.
2. Eliminate sources of glare and lower light levels in the room. Don't sit
facing a bright window. If necessary, use screen hoods, glare shields over
the screen or wear anti-UV/anti-glare glasses.
3. Put a noise absorbing mat under your computer. Pull your computer away
from the wall or any hard surface that reflects noise and vibration back to
you.
4. Rest occasionally during periods of intense concentration. Closing your
eyes helps.
5. Turn off the VDT when not in use.

You might be able to tweak it up to about 1600 cps, and of course
it depends on the network traffic and the host you're getting the
file from, but 1300 isn't extraordinarily low, no.
The hoo-hah about 57,600 bps is just that. I doubt anyone has ever
seen that kind of speed, except maybe in carefully controlled directly

You've been reading too many marketing brochures. A 14400 modem only
guarantees you a throughput of 14400. Even with plain text files and
v.42bis compression, you never get over 3200 cps. 57600 is just a serial
port speed, not your modem speed.
As to why you only get 1300 cps: Are you transferring compressed files
(if so, no additional compression is possible)? Is the modem on the other
end set to run at 57600? Most workstations and routers cannot run serial
ports at over 38400 (sometimes much less).
For comparison purposes, can you tell us what speed you get if you
download a file using (say) Zterm over a normal serial connection?

You've been reading too many marketing brochures. A 14400 modem only
guarantees you a throughput of 14400. Even with plain text files and
v.42bis compression, you never get over 3200 cps. 57600 is just a serial
port speed, not your modem speed.
Hi, there!
"bps" in 14400 bps stands for bits per second. In Fetch, the
throughout rate is given by bytes per second. 1 byte = 8 bits.
Therefore 1300 bytes per second = 1300 * 8 bps = 10400 bps (Hope
I did the multiplication right :-))
Your v.32bis modem is capable of transferring data at 14400 bps
given that there is no overhead in the transfer protocol and both
computers are sending and receiving at full speed. This happens
on very rare occasions. Since you are using Fetch, I am assuming
you are connecting to the Internet using SLIP, which has a fair
amount of overhead (that's why SLIP can let you do all kinds of
nifty stuff such as multitasking, etc). When you download files,
you also have to take the network traffic and the CPU load of the
server at that time into account. These factors make the file
transfer non-ideal situations so you will not get the maximum
performance.
About v.42bis compression: v.42bis does NOT always help you. If
you are transferring compressed data (e.g. .sit, .cpt, .gif,
QuickTime files), v.42bis will actually DECREASE the performance.
v.42bis cannot further compress the compressed data and it adds
overhead to the file transfer. However, v.42bis significantly
increases text transfers so it will make your terminal run a lot
faster when you telnet. It's a judgment call whether to turn on
v.42bis in a particular session.
For the maximum performance: turn on the hardware handshaking
feature of your modem (and make sure you have a hardware
handshaking modem cable, or sometimes they are called high speed
modem cable). Set the data rate in your SLIP software to maximum
(57600 bps). This is the rate of data transfer between your
modem and Mac while the modem-to-modem transfer rate is still
14400. You want the computer-to-modem speed higher than
modem-to-modem because v.42bis can increase the modem-to-modem
speed to higher than 14400. In this setting, there will be no
delay in transferring data between the modem and computer while
the modems can do all the tricks to increase the performance.
Hope this helps a bit. Good luck!
First of all 14400 bps (= bits per second) is not directly comparable
with the 1300 bps (= bytes per second). There is also some overhead, so
you have to divide modem speeds by 10 to get bytes per second.
On that measure, 1300 bytes vs 14,400 bits is quite reasonable. Now,
the higher throughput (57.6K) is based on an optimal datastream for
compression. You probably don't have that when downloading files.
Assume that you get 1/2 of this. That puts you at ~2800.
Also the ftp protocol itself has its own overhead, as well as whatever
method you are using to get your TCP/IP connection. Depending on how
far away you are fetching from, you can have other delays in the
intermediate links of the network. When I go off-site, I can only get
about 10,000 bytes/sec. with fetch connected directly to 10Megabit
ethernet using MacTCP. You can easily lose another 50% of your raw
bandwidth to various protocol overheads. That brings your results in
line with expectations. Actually, your throughput sounds quite good.
Thanks again to everyone who wrote to me.

Subject: ftp help
Help! I'm sure the solution's simple, but the problem is as follows: I
succesfully remote ftp'd a xxx.sit.hqx file from ftp.apple.com (via
princeton ftp server) and the file was received in "pieces" (8 mail
pieces). I placed the pieces together in proper order (with Eudora) and
saved them together as a file. "Stuff-it Expander" threw up and refused to
expand the file. "DEHQX" indicated it was looking for the beginning; the
file itself starts with the obligatory "This file must be....". Is there a
mode that ftp from apple must be in to properly transfer? Thanks in advance

Subject: GIFs in animation (Q)
Dear Netters,
It appears that GIFConverter and PICT-Show are missing elements that I need to
make a good animated sequence of .GIF satellite images. GIFConverter 2.3.7
has the show option, yet you are forced to split up each image by 1 second or
MORE. PICT-Show 2.0 will allow sequential .GIF viewing, however, it is so
buggy that sometimes even with all extensions off, 32bit addressing off, it
still will crash with a BusError. Then othertimes it works beautifully. I am
running a Mac LC with 10 MB of RAM. What shareware or freeware is the least
buggy to create an animated sequence of .GIF images without putting up a blank
screen between images, but allowing one image to flow to the next? Please let
me know if you can recommend any shareware or freeware other than the above to
do these animations on the original LC. Also if you know what ftp site or
gopher site to find it at that would be useful too. I have reset my desktop,
PRAM etc... with no definitive fix for the PICT-Show software. BTW it is not
the wait for the file to load that I mind, it is the blank screen that
GIFConverter gives between images.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Subject: IM 3 CD-ROM & NEC Drivers Incompatibility
Hi,
Well, unfortunately there is a problem with NEC CD-ROM drivers and the
Info-Mac 3 CD-ROM. People are still pointing fingers at everybody, but there
does for the most part appear to be genuine interest by most people involved
in getting the problem fixed. Below are listed the players that I've been
dealing with. I've talked with an average of 4 or 5 people at each company
several times, so you might be able to imagine how frustrating the whole
process is.
Optical Solutions: sold us the one-off machine and the Dataware software
NCS: provides technical support for Optical Solutions' products
Dateware: contracted out the one-off software
LB: author of the one-off software
NEC: makes the drives bundled with Trantor driver software
Trantor: writes the driver software for NEC's CDROM drives
Nimbus: pressed the actual discs for us
The problem appears to be that the NEC driver software expects the disc to
have partition information, but the Dataware software doesn't write that
information to the one-off.
According to Dataware and the person who wrote the one-off software, having
the partition information on a volume that is not partitioned into multiple
parts is optional, and even though the newer HFS specs allow for it it is not
necessary. In order to be backward compatible, Apple software permits doing
it either way and that's why the Apple driver and other drivers work fine with
the Info-Mac 3 disc. The interpretation of the HFS specs can also make the
difference in whether you believe the duplicate master directory (or whatever
that's called) should be on such a disc as well. Dataware doesn't write this
info. Anyway, this is Dataware's story.
I don't think I buy this as meaning NEC is at fault, but it is true that NEC's
drivers/drives have tended to have more problems than others in the past.
During the past couple of days from all the noise I've created, it's possible
that Trantor will update the NEC driver to handle this and hopefully Dataware
will write the partition information into its next release of one-off software
due out in a couple of weeks. If I can get Trantor to make their driver
compatible, then we'll have a workable work-around, and hopefully soon.
For now, the best work-around for people with the Info-Mac 3 CD-ROM disc and
NEC drives is to use a 3rd party driver (the one by Charismac works with NEC
drives and the Info-Mac 3 CD-ROM, and I have been told that FWB's works as
well, but I haven't verified it myself). I understand that this isn't a great
solution, and I'll try to get something better as soon as I can.
You might ask why we didn't figure out this problem before pressing the discs,
and actually we did get a scent of it. When the one-off we made didn't work
on our NEC drive, I called NCS. They told me to send them a disc so that they
could test it out. They tried it out, tested it with their diagnostic
software, and assured me that the disc worked fine with their other drives,
and that the NEC drives just can't read one-off media. The CD-ROMs once
pressed should work without any problem on NEC's drives as well as others,
they said. I have to take responsibility for being so naive -- boy, what a
way to have to learn....
I'm going to be at Macworld Tokyo till Feb 20, so I will report on the status
of this problem and the best work-arounds once I return.

Cliff

Subject: Info-Mac CD-ROM Profits
In a recent posting someone was questioning why the Info-Mac CD-ROM costs
$49.95 since it is supposed to cost less than $10 per disc to make a CD-ROM.
It is certainly true that the physical process of pressing a CD-ROM is well
under $10, but there's a lot more to making a CD-ROM than just pressing it. I
don't want to get into the financial details of our basement company, but here
are a few semi-random remarks I thought I'd throw out:
- we spend several hundred hours getting the files ready for making the
CD-ROM, and support University of Utah CS students with part-time work in the
process
- we send out complimentary copies to authors
- we donate some of the proceeds back to sumex-aim
- the hardware and software we use is not free
- running a business involves a LOT of unforeseen expenses
- I still have a second mortgage on my house as well as my mother's house,
which were taken out in order to get this whole project going a year and a
half ago
I bet I've opened a can of worms here that I'm going to pay for shortly. We'd
like to think that we're providing a service, but if a lot of people feel
strongly that we're taking advantage of the authors and the sumex-aim site,
then we'll seriously consider not doing it in the future.
BTW, I'm going to Macworld Expo Tokyo tomorrow and won't be back till 2/20, so
I won't be able to answer any email till after that.

Subject: info on mac scsi ports and drivers
Dear List,
I am using a CCD camera to capture video images to my mac. The last camera
I bought is unusual in that it digitizes the image the user can control the
averaging) and then converts it back to analog and sends it out to a
monitor or my mac over a BNC cable. I then grab the image with a
digitizing board on my mac.
The camera is far better then others I have tried. WHat I would like to do
is be able to take the digitized image directly from the camera without
going throught the extra D/A and A/D steps. The company here is very
interested in making the modification, but they are only familar with
Peecee computers and do not know where to start.
I thought the most cost effective solution would be to install a SCSI
interface on the camera box. Where do I find info on SCSI's (pin numbers,
transfer rates, driver programming, etc)? There must be good reference
books out there.
Thank you, David

Last week I received a *second* LineLink 144e modem. I
couldn't get the first one to work so I returned it to
MacWarehouse. The new modem seems to have the same problems as
the old. When I switch it on the greed MR led (power) flashes 3
times and then is continuesly on, which is the normal
procedure as described in the manual. Also the CD led is on,
which is a default setting (&C0) for this modem. The modem
responds to AT-commands, but doesn't return response codes.
For example: when I type AT&C1 the IO led (data being send or
received) flashes and the CD led goes out. ATDT makes the OH
led light (when the modem is not connected to a telephone
line). So far, so good. It's when I connect a phone line to the
modem that the real problems start. The modem shuts down
completely when I send the commands ATDT or ATH1. I hear a
click (relay?) and all the leds go out, including MR. I then
have to switch the powerswitch several times to get the MR led
on again.Has anyone seen this problem? I've tried it with a
Macintosh IIfx, a SE and a PowerBook 100, with no succes, same
result in all cases. I don't think the modem is faulty. I'ts
my second one, and it behaves just like the first one. I'm
sure it's not the modem cable, because I tried this with
another modem and it worked fine. The telephone line is also
not the problem, because it works with 2 other modems (Global
Village and Dove). Because I'm in the Netherlands, I'm not
using the original power supply (120 V), but a similar 220V
power supply. Can it be my power supply? (Original: input 120V
15W, output 9V 1 Amp; the one I'm using instead is input 220V,
output 9V 300mA).Does anyone have the international telephone

Dear Corey:
I have the adresse of an On-line dictionary. The way I use it is with
TurboGopher. You must make a bookmark with the following parameters:
SERVER NAME: uts.mcc.ac.uk
SERVER PORT: 70
SELECTOR: 7/gopherservices/enquire.english
Cheers!
You don't mean /usr/lib/dict/words, do you?
What do you have in mind?
The gopher sites out there are full of dictionaries and thesaureses
(thesauri?). You can telnet to them with little trouble, other than
getting on at busy time. Try
telnet bbs.oit.unc.edu
or
telnet seymour.md.gov
In either case, go down one of the subject trees to get to the virtual
reference desk. Keep looking -- they're not hard to find.
If you have Gopher, you can access the Oxford English Dictionary on
CD-ROM. Just do a Veronica search for the string "OED" (no quotes) and
one of the options should be "Search for a word in the OED" or something
like that. Make that a bookmark, and hey presto, instant on-line
dictionary :-) I dunno how to do it without Gopher, tho'.
Hope this helps...

Subject: Problems with SITcomm
I've recently received Aladdin's SITcomm software, and have found some
strange and annoying problems. Has anyone else had similar difficulties,
and if so, have you been able to work around them? What follows are my
observations and opinions (in no particular order):
Sound problems: I use Suitcase 2 to manage sounds, so "simple beep" is the
only sound actually "installed" in my system. Others are in a separate
folder and are "open" via Suitcase, and one of these is selected in the
Sound control panel. SITcomm can play its own custom sounds for "special"
events, and this works fine. However, for other events (when the "host"
system beeps at you, for example) only the simple beep is played. If
SITcomm's custom sounds are turned off, then the simple beep is played for
all other events as well. However, if I click in a non-active window (say,
click in the terminal window while the Modem Status-dialing window is
active), then the sound selected in the Sound control panel is played (this
is a Suitcase-installed sound). An Aladdin programmer (LDR) responded,
"if the sounds are turned off we do NOTHING at those times. I do know that
when you connect, the AMT will beep (using the the standard beep) 3
times". Well, OK.
Initializing and resetting the modem take a very long time (maybe as much
as a full minute). I've selected "custom" modem in the Apple Modem tool,
and use the init string AT&F1&K3 S95=3 W2 M3. That and the remaining
"stuff" sent (viewable in the Modem Monitor window, which I normally don't
use) seems to be "typed" in the monitor window with long delays between the
lines. This is annoying when you "give up" on getting a connection to one
service and want to dial in elsewhere. The only way out is to cancel
dialing, which goes through the entire slow reset procedure (this is
apparently not optional or adjustable - you have no control over the
commands sent to the modem during reset).
The notepad can't keep up with my none-too-fast typing. It's OK for the
first several lines, but once there are more than a few lines in the
notepad window, it slows dramatically. I can type 4 or 5 words ahead of
what's appearing on screen. The notepad would otherwise be a neat
feature.
SITcomm will not dial unless it is the front-most application - it won't
dial in the background. If the service(s) you use most have a lot of
traffic, you may have to redial many times before getting a connection, and
you can't do anything else with your Mac while SITcomm is dialing. I
consider this a serious limitation.
You can't type in the terminal window to send commands to the modem. If
the necessary commands aren't part of your initialzation string, there is
no other way to send them. Say you simply want to turn off the modem's
speaker in the middle of a string of redials. Can't do it without changing
the settings in the modem tool.
I have redialing in the Apple Modem tool set to "every 15 seconds".
Frequently, the Modem Status window states "Redialing...", but the modem
isn't responding (Supra's status display says OK, Modem Monitor window's
last line is "ATDT 368-3888"). This condition is only resolved by
cancelling, then clicking Connect or cmd-K.
When all menu titles are disabled, some of the menu items under them are
still available. While initializing, dialing, or resetting the modem, you
can select "Address Book" under the "Session" menu. If you click the
Connect button in the Address Book in this situation, SITcomm goes through
the whole "reset-the-modem-then-connect" routine, complete with the
nattering of the custom sounds, if turned on. This may be proper behavior,
but the menu items under disabled menus shouldn't be available to the
user.
You need additional software to create "macros". The included Frontier
stuff will do it, but it is awkward to have to launch both SITcomm and
Frontier Runtime (included with SITcomm), and remember to quit Frontier RT
when you've quit your SITcomm session. I don't yet have AppleScript, so I
can't discuss that option here.
The Apple VT102 tool does not seem to be ANSI, even though the pop-up in
the terminal tool window says "ANSI/VT102", so bbsUs that require this
(like Hermes) look terrible on screen (not really a SITcomm issue, I
suppose). Is there an true ANSI VT tool available somewhere? Or am I just
missing something obvious?
My system: Stock Mac IIsi, 5/80, system 7.0.1 tuned, portrait monitor
using 16 grays, not on any network. Lots of control panels and extensions
(contact me for a list if you're interested). SupraFAXModem V.32bis with
proper cable. All of the above "problems" occur with no background
processes running.
I emailed the items listed in the first four paragraphs to Aladdin, and got
a response several days later. While I'm always grateful for any response
from a company I've sent money to, there was no useful info in the
response (mostly "I'll-pass-that-along-to-the-programmer" and
"maybe-in-the-next-release" type comments).
I'd like to hear from anyone using SITcomm who can suggest solutions other
than "send it back and use MyFavCommApp". Zterm is not without problems,
but it's looking better all the time...
You can respond to the digest or directly to me, as you prefer. Thanks
very much.

Shameless plug:
if you need to build emergency disks, try using FaberFinder instead of the
Apple
Finder. You will be able to launch applications - the task you are supposed to
accomplish when using emergency disks - and get 384K (Finder 7.1 size) - 3K
(FaberFinder size) = 381K savings, which is definitely better than nothing.
As an added benefit, you will boot much faster :-) .
Hopefully, FaberFinder is still archived at sumex-aim.stanford.edu.

question. After I adjust the speed (using the slider) to my liking, how
do I save the movie at the new speed? (Sorry if that's a daft question.)
Thanks.

Subject: questionable APS behaviour
i just called APS this morning to order a SCSI boy adapter for
my PB180; this was in response to their ad in the feb issue of
macworld announcing in a bright red flag "NEW LOW PRICES" and
a price of $19 for the SCSI boy... the sales person tried to
charge me $29, and i said the printed price was $19... she went
off to her supervisor and came back to say that it was a misprint;
that the price was $29... i said "well, you advertised $19" and
she said "we are not going to honor that advertisement."
i find that marginal behaviour for a company; to advertise in
bold letters a "NEW LOW PRICE" and then claim it was a misprint...
even it if was a misprint and it should have been $29, then the
claim of lower prices was a crock...

I'm trying to Larry!
I placed my order late January, and yes, it appears that an Internet
address is sufficient for the special offer: "Must be a registered user of
a major electronic on-line service to qualify", as Connectix wrote back to
me and said my copy of RAM Doubler would be dispatched 2 February - but I
haven't got anything yet : (
For those of you who missed this (Don't read TidBITS ? - shame on you !),
you can get RAM Doubler for $49 (and some other great offers) until the end
of June 1994. Send mail to connectix@aol.com for more details.

Since there has been a short thread on RAM Doubler recently, I thought
I'd mention that the MacWarehouse catalog I received yesterday advertises
it for $49.95 as a ``SPECIAL PRICE while supplies last.'' 800-255-6227
BTW, RAM Doubler works great on my 4MB PB170. My System eats up 2MB, and
I can still open Maple V with a memory partition of 3200K, plus other progs
as if I had 8MB. (I did notice, however, that I couldn't really give Maple
more than 3200K, i.e. setting anything higher than 3200K in its Get Info
box didn't seem to give it an effectively larger memory partition.)

Subject: RAM Troubler, er... Doubler
Several people have posted questions about Connectix' RAM Doubler, and I
thought
I'd stir my opinions into the pot.
I first installed it on one of the machines I manage, a IIci with 8 MB. It
seemed to work fine, giving me an apparent 16 MB. The next morning, though, it
couldn't seem to find any network out there. That was a little odd, because
it's
got an Ethernet card, and every other machine around it seemed to have no
problem finding the network. I restarted the machine, and it was happy again. A
few hours later, it began ignoring the network once more!
I removed RAM Doubler, and it no longer had the problem. Since I was already
lavishing my tender ministrations upon this machine, I finally got around to
updating it to System 7.1 from 7.0.1 (tuned). I also ran the new Network
Software Installer, version 1.4.2.
On a lark, I decided to try RAM Doubler again. This time, at the end of the
extension-loading seqence, I got an error dialog that said "The System file is
damaged. This file can be fixed by running the Installer... blah blah blah." I
restarted, and told my extensions manager to turn off RAMM Doubler, and the
system came back famously. Turned RD back on, dead system. Back off, no
problem.
I don't think I'll be using RAM Troubler too much.
BTW: Yes, I DID try it out with version 1.0.1. Still no luck.

Subject: SCSI ID problems
I had previously posted a problem I seemed to be having with my Centris 650
hard drive a few days ago that I *think* I've been able to fix, but it brings
up a question about SCSI IDs.
The problem was this: my hard drive would periodically stop working/freeze up
after a few minutes of activity. I had reinstalled driver software,
reformatted the drive, ran 3 different disk repair programs, (in other words,
everything I could think of) to try and find the problem. I was ready to
give up and take it into the local apple dealer. I had an extra 512K of VRAM
that I had installed, so I took that out (to insure that no questions about
voided warranties would arise) and decided to see what would happen
if I unplugged the external SCSI devices (I have a 240 ext. HD and an Apple 300
CD drive). Well, after trying that, the drive worked fine. After trying (and
failing) to replicate the freeze up, I reinstalled the VRAM (just to make sure
that wasn't the problem) and tried again. Still ran fine. I decided it
must have something to do with the SCSI devices. After checking my Apple users
guides and the LaCie Tsunami guide, I decided to change my SCSI setup from:
Mac (ID 7) ---- CD drive (ID 3) ---- 240 ext (ID 1, terminated)
to:
Mac (ID 7) ---- CD drive (ID 3) ---- 240 ext (ID 6, terminated)
It works fine now (so far).
My point is this: it appears that the SCSI IDs made some sort of difference,
but nothing I read in the manuals indicates that it should. They say the
higher the ID, the higher the priority of the device, but why should this make
a difference? It seems to me that the 240 HD needed to have a higher priority
than the CD drive for everything to work.
Sorry for rambling on about this, but I wasted several hours trying to figure
this out and could have wasted some money if I'd taken it into my local CompUSA
for repairs and nothing was wrong other than incorrect SCSI IDs. I did check
the various FAQs and saw nothing on it. If anyone has any insight on this, I
would sure appreciate it. Maybe the answers can save someone else a bit of
time.

Hello netters,
Recently I sent e-mail to the digest regarding a strange problem I was
having with file-sharing. When file-sharing was enabled on my IIci
(20/230), i could not empty the trash, the computer would simply hang. In
an attempted to find the cause, I found that my old CPS Delete Tracking
INIT (from a VERY old Mactools ca. 1985) was the cause. At first, I
thought that the INIT was not 32-bit compatible (since this problem arose
concurrent to my upgrade to 20MB RAM), but it has to be something else
because with 32-bit addressing on, but file-sharing off, I can empty the
trash. Anyone know what might be causing the problem? TIA.

How about setting up a WAIS server and letting each person describe
themselves and what they are looking for. Then you could use a person's
statement about themselves as a WAIS search criteria. Store the writeups
without person info and instead have a reference number that is tied to a
separate database that connects the reference number to the person info.
FYI: WAIS is a freeform data search system. You put a bunch of text files
on a server and WAIS does an inverse index of them. Then when you search
with WAIS, it gives you back a ranked listing of files that seem similar to
what you are looking for. The files are ranked from 1000 to 0. The really
cool part is that you can say find me a file that is similar to this other
file.
Suggest you grab a copy of MacWAIS and play with it to get an idea how it
all works. You need to be directly connected to the internet to use
MacWAIS.
An alternative is AppleSearch by Apple. It does the same thing except in
the Apple User Interface style.

Well, we did this for a serious reason. We live near the coast
and during the summer are potentially slammed by hurricanes. Science
teachers who give students meterological projects are increasingly
becoming involved with assemblying satellite images of hurricanes into
animated movies. For those who live on the coast, this is a serious thing.
Likewise, during this time of year, cold fronts and blizzards are
also tracked and assembled. The reason for doing it is not for entertainment.

I finally got around to calling Microsoft to getting version 4.0E
of Word -- the one that works on 040 Macs. I only use Word to
read files that come in Word format, especially quick save format.
A rude dude named John told me to upgrade, fella, to Word 5.1 and
what did I expect with 6 year old software on new machines. Before
I told him that I expected what people could get earlier, namely
version 4.0E, he hung up on me.
So I called again, and this time I got the infinitely more
polite Suzanne Sylliaasen (SILL-yuh-sen). I asked her about the
license situation now that MS was no longer sending out version
4.0E. She checked and found out that any valid license holder of
Word 4 could copy version 4.0E wherever said holder could find
version 4.0E.
So I am asking my fellow netters if any of you could help keep
my computer free of silly Word toolbars, and provide me a copy

a lot, clearly, else I would upgrade to 5.1.). I can also FTP.
If you can help, please respond personally to collins@cs.wm.edu.

Subject: ZTerm Font Confusion
Greetings, all!
I'm having a particularly queer problem with ZTerm lately. When trying to
install ZTerm on a Quadra 800 (System 7.1, a few standard freeware
extensions that all work fine on my own IIvx) for my dad, I have been
utterly and completely unable to have the program show up using the
correct font. Instead of using the built-in terminal fonts, ZTerm uses
Helvetica Bold Oblique. Copying from my working (correctly) version of
ZTerm, from CD-ROM, or from a compacted floppy disk all resulted in the
same thing.
I am using ATM 3.5.1, Adobe Type Reunion, and about 7 megs of Adobe PostScript
Type 1 fonts. Is there a font ID number conflict going on here?
Reinstalling the System software completely did not solve this problem.
HELP! Thanks...
